Welcome RecoverX 2.0: Disruption Needs 30 people, Not 300+!

Today, we announced our most innovative product ever, RecoverX 2.0. But before I talk about the why and the what of v2.0, I’d like to talk about the steps of our journey. To date with RecoverX v1.0, we made a very calculated first step towards building the new data management platform for the cloud era that we call “the control plane.” With RecoverX v1.0, we built an elastic, software-only data protection product for the market of third platform applications powered by non-relational, cloud databases. Our reason for starting with third platform applications was that we saw rapid market adoption, a need to help customers accelerate their journey to cloud-native applications, and we noticed that customers were struggling with data protection. This focus has served us well as evidenced by significant customer adoption among Fortune 500 enterprises! And along the way, we managed to pick up a number of industry awards, such as: TechTarget Product of the Year, media coverage such as “Tesla of the Backup Industry”, and top recognition from Gartner analysts. All of this with fewer than 30 people in the company!

The next phase in delivering on our vision, RecoverX 2.0, is equally special: it’s rooted in the learnings of our customers and in our vision of application-centric data management for a hybrid cloud & multi-cloud world that we set out to achieve back on day one. It’s a bold step, empowering customers to accelerate their journey to the cloud. On this special launch day, I want to look back at our journey, share the genesis, and introduce RecoverX 2.0.

Leapfrogging The Backup and Recovery Market

From the outset, we have focused on a simple premise: applications influence the choice of the IT stack – from databases to storage to data management – and, as enterprises move their application workloads (third platform applications and traditional applications) to cloud (hybrid, public, multi-cloud) – data management needs to be fundamentally reinvented to be “application-centric”, not VM-centric, not LUN-centric, not storage infrastructure-centric.

Since we started, we have engaged with north of 200+ customers and are now lucky to have leading Fortune 500 customers successfully using Datos IO RecoverX in production. To share one of my most favorite examples: the world’s leading online apparel eCommerce retailer is under massive transformation where they are re-architecting their applications on their journey to the cloud-native world. No more relational databases and no more monolithic infrastructure environments. This customer has a significant part of their eCommerce platform now deployed on massively scalable cloud databases – but they also knew that if they were going to bet on cloud infrastructures, they needed next-generation backup and recovery platforms that are architected for the cloud. They needed a data management platform that was built for the cloud – one that is software only, without media server choke points in order to handle big data scale, where the secondary data is made available in native formats to enable monetization of the secondary data via industry-standard tools.  Most important to them was seamless data recoverability from on-premise to public cloud environments in order to empower their application developers while meeting all their internal compliance and governance needs.

The Genesis of RecoverX v2.0

About 6 to 9 months ago, we were presenting to one of the world’s largest financial enterprises: the Q&A was great, the audience was exceedingly engaged, and our sales rep was smiling end to end as he knew he has a BIG opportunity! As we were closing out, the MD of that team asked us: “Can we see your product roadmap?” As we were walking through our product plans, he asked a very interesting question — “When will you be supporting Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server?”  Targeting relational databases was always part of our game plan, but I was interested in hearing his perspectives.  And, so I responded: “Why? There are already so many vendors who provide backup and recovery for such traditional databases.” And the answer was very profound and perfectly aligned with our vision. He said “We are moving to the cloud, and we won’t be taking our existing data protection tools with us.” He was not the only customer we’ve spoken to over the last year that has said the same thing. Customers are smart and they know that none of their existing vendor products give them the leverage or applicability for the mission-critical applications.  Not that these existing products don’t support enterprise data sources, but none of these products were architected for the cloud infrastructure of – scale, elasticity, and application-centricity.

On the similar vein, our interactions with customers revealed that organizations are gaining valuable analytics insights with their Big Data (Apache Hadoop) environments and thus are increasing their investment in such technologies. However, nearly unanimous is the feeling that the experience is a challenge (e.g., “ How do you manage petabytes of data without losing critical information?”). Thus, starting with 2.0 we are planning to make it seamless to protect and gain value from Big Data environments.

With RecoverX 2.0, Datos IO is going beyond just data protection & recovery for non-relational databases. Our v2.0 expands our product functionality in 3 key areas: firstly, we are expanding support for cloud-native data protection and cloud data mobility use cases for relational databases starting with Microsoft SQL Server. Second, we are adding the capability to protect petabyte scale Apache HDFS clusters. Finally, support for new data sources has to be coupled with platform scale, ease of use and robustness and here’s where our engineering team has made significant contributions: adding additional scale to Datos IO software can now scale to datasets of 100TB+, enterprise-grade policy management engine to support operational tasks, and exposing operational metrics for protection policies, user management, et al.

Onwards and Upwards!
RecoverX 2.0 is the next chapter in the evolution of Datos IO towards application-centric data management for multi-cloud applications. It provides customers the ability to migrate and deploy their next generation applications in the multi-cloud model of their choice, while having the assurance of data recoverability, data mobility and cost efficiency.  Adding data mobility to the primary Datos IO data protection capabilities is core to our vision: protect, mobilize and monetize data at scale.
