Last week we celebrated our third year anniversary, wow – what a journey this has been. Datos IO was little more than an idea back in June 2014 when Prasenjit and I got together to take a deep look at the data management space.  It started as an idea that if we wanted revolutionize the way to protect, mobilize, and monetize data in the cloud, then we had to do it ourselves. We also knew that the backup and recovery market was deeply entrenched and while traditional products have been around for 20+ years, they are fundamentally not built for the principles of cloud architecture: independently-scaled elastic compute and storage, multi-tenant, and geo-distribution. We were also convinced that in order to win in this massive market, we needed to focus on a software-only control plane based approach to reinventing data management for the cloud era. The early decisions we made back in 2014 could not have served us better!

And, today is another BIG day for team Datos IO, aka the #datonians!

I am blessed and honored to welcome Suresh Vasudevan, former CEO and president of Nimble Storage, to our Datos IO Board of Directors.  Suresh will be an invaluable asset to our team as we evolve and expand to new heights – across our team, customers, partners, and as a company.  In addition to his genuine enthusiasm and passion for data management and belief in our software-only product strategy, the insights that Suresh brings will be extremely useful as we scale from 30 people to 300 people in the years ahead.  At Nimble Storage, he cultivated a small early stage startup into an industry leader for next generation flash storage systems and predictive analytics for infrastructure and storage management. Suresh led Nimble Storage through a successful IPO, more than $500 million in annualized revenues and over 10,000 customers before Nimble was acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise in May 2017.  And prior to leading Nimble Storage, he spent 10+ years at NetApp leading product strategy and operations resulting in massive growth trajectory for NetApp.

Datos IO is in the midst of hyper-growth and we will need to continue to adapt and reinvent ourselves as we move forward: all to meet the need of customers and partners.  Taking our idea, building a rock star team, and crafting it into the company that it’s become has been quite an adventure, and the results speak for themselves. We have earned the trust of both Fortune 500 organizations such as eBay, Barracuda Networks, Cisco and others. Next-generation web-scale companies such as Maxwell Health, Ayla Networks, OpenTable and others have also adopted our solution.  In that same vein, we have been honored with amazing market and industry recognition: Storage Product of the Year award from Tech Target, The Tesla of the Backup World from Chris Mellor, both NetApp and Cisco have become strategic investors in our company validating the market opportunity and our seminal data management architecture built for the cloud era, Gartner recognized the fundamental reinvention needed for backup and defining a new category of “Cloud Data Backup”, and so many more.  And, all of this with a team of only 30 people!  Imagine the opportunity when we scale the company to 100 people and our customers get subsequent product innovations in their hands — the sky’s the limit!

Prasenjit, the #datonians, and I are convinced that Suresh will bring a unique perspective to the table and guide us in this next phase of our journey.  I truly believe that the future holds so much potential, and while we have achieved a lot already, we have only taken a small step.  As we scale for the opportunities in our path forward, I am so glad that Suresh has decided to buckle in for the journey with us!
