Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest hockey players of all time, learned from his dad to ‘skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.’ As a parent and youth hockey coach, I appreciate the wisdom in that statement. As an experienced executive, I also recognize that the adage is as true in the world of business as it is in sports, which is why I recently joined Datos IO.
Throughout the history of technology, there have been multiple inflection points that fundamentally change the foundation of business; mainframe, distributed computing, the internet, and most recently the cloud. Over that time, however, one challenge has remained constant; the need to protect and manage your data. Over the past two decades I have been fortunate to work with some of the world’s most disruptive data protection technologies such as Data Domain. And, just like Data Domain revolutionized data protection for the traditional on-premise world, a new requirement is upon us, protecting and managing data in a cloud-first world.
Driven by the rapid proliferation in social, mobile, and IoT, multi-cloud has become the new normal for organizations’ IT infrastructure. While organizations continue to run certain applications in their traditional datacenter infrastructure, they are rapidly migrating applications to run in the cloud or building new web-scale applications running either locally on private cloud or on public cloud using services like AWS or GCP. The implications are profound; in a cloud-first world, data protection and data management have never been more critical but organizations are woefully unprepared for this new reality because no vendor has tackled the issue of how to effectively protect and manage data in a hyper-scale, distributed, multi-cloud world…until now!
In just 3 years, Datos IO has evolved from a vision, to a concept, to a product, to most recently winning Product of the Year honors and being called ‘The Tesla of Backup’. That doesn’t happen with conventional thinking. What this tells me is that Datos IO is rebelling against the status quo of a $20B industry and fundamentally changing the data protection and data management landscape. Our radically new application-centric approach ‘skates to where the puck is going’, enabling organizations to protect, mobilize, and monetize their data and thrive in today’s hyper-scale, distributed, multi-cloud world. To do that, we’ve had to reinvent data management with ground-breaking technologies including:
- Non-Media Server Data Transfer which eliminates the inherent shortcomings of legacy media-server based architectures
- Globally Distributed Metadata which provides location independent, global data visibility enabling backup anywhere, recover anywhere, and migrate anywhere capabilities
- Semantic Deduplication which delivers the highest order storage efficiency in the cloud, up to 20x greater than traditional deduplication. Just like Data Domain deduplication disrupted an entire industry, semantic deduplication can do the same for the cloud
- Source Independent Consistent Versioning which provides native format, always consistent data versioning enabling complete data recoverability, portability, and mobility
The writing is on the wall. Recent IDC research indicates that 3rd platform technologies dominate IT spend with a healthy 11.8% CAGR while traditional 2nd platform spend lags with a negative 6.8% CAGR. Datos IO’s revolutionary application-centric approach to data management is poised to deliver needed change, skating ‘where the puck is going’, and leading the market for years to come.
So, we have a huge opportunity ahead of us, but what is most exciting for me is the opportunity to work with a group of awesome people, with a common mission of rebelling against the status quo, ‘skating where the puck is going’, building the next great data management company, and ultimately helping our customers protect and manage their most valuable asset; their data. Rarely do such opportunities come along and I am humbled and grateful to the Datos IO founders for their faith in me.
I look forward to sharing more in our blog series. We’re just getting started! Time to #BeARebel
